Wide Color Gamut (Display-P3 vs sRGB) Tester

Verify whether your screen is capable of reproducing Wide Color Gamut (WCG) spaces such as Apple Display-P3, DCI-P3, and AdobeRGB, or if your operating system / browser is clamping colors to standard 8-bit sRGB.

DCI-P3 covers 25% more visible colors than standard sRGB. Test if your monitor, laptop, or phone supports wide color gamut and HDR.

Test 1: The Invisible Emblem Challenge

If your screen only displays standard sRGB, both colors clamp to identical red values and the emblem is 100% invisible. If you have a Wide Gamut display (MacBook Pro, iPhone OLED, ProArt, OLED TV), an emblem will clearly appear!

Test 2: Side-by-Side sRGB vs Display-P3 Split Strip

Look at the split border below. On a standard sRGB monitor, the left and right halves look identical. On a wide gamut display, the right side is visibly richer, deeper, and more punchy.

Standard sRGB
Wide Gamut Display-P3
sRGB (Rec. 709)

Standardized in 1996 for CRT monitors and the early web. Covers approximately 35% of the colors visible to the human eye. Most cheap office monitors only cover ~95% sRGB.

Display-P3 (DCI-P3)

Created by the digital cinema industry and adopted as standard by Apple (iPhone, iPad, Mac) and premium gaming monitors. Displays 25% larger color volume with richer reds and greens.

Rec. 2020 (BT.2020)

The target color space for 4K/8K Ultra HD HDR television. Covers ~75% of visible colors. Only top-tier QD-OLED, RGB laser projectors, and mastering monitors can reproduce >85% of Rec. 2020.

Understanding Wide Color Gamut & Display Color Spaces

1Why standard sRGB looks dull next to DCI-P3

sRGB was designed in 1996 for CRT monitors and only covers roughly 35% of the human visible color spectrum. DCI-P3 extends the green and red primary chromaticities outwards, rendering vivid ruby reds, neon oranges, and lush emerald greens that look washed out on standard sRGB displays.

2Operating System Color Management

macOS and iOS have native system-wide color management enabled by default with Display-P3 display profiles. On Windows, you must ensure that Windows HD Color (HDR) is turned on or that your monitor's ICC color profile is correctly mapped in Windows Color Management settings.

3How the "Invisible Emblem" test works

The background canvas is filled with pure sRGB red rgb(255, 0, 0), while the center emblem is styled with CSS Color Module 4 color(display-p3 1 0 0). On an sRGB-only screen, the browser maps both to the exact same physical phosphor/LED output, making the shape completely invisible. On a wide gamut panel, the P3 red triggers higher saturation subpixels!

410-bit Color Depth vs 8-bit Banding

Because wide gamut encompasses a significantly larger color volume, 8-bit color depth (256 shades per channel) can sometimes produce visible color banding steps. Professional creator displays use true 10-bit (1.07 billion colors) or 8-bit + FRC (temporal dithering) to ensure silky-smooth gradients across wide gamuts.
